Grayson Waller retained the NXT Championship over CM Punk on Wednesday's NXT after Kevin Owens jumped onto the ring apron and distracted Punk, WWE.com reported. Waller then rolled Punk up and pulled his tights to keep the title. The match took place on November 4.
According to WWE.com, Owens appeared at ringside in the middle of a GTS attempt by Punk. Waller used the opening to roll Punk up, holding the tights as he did.
The title match was set after Waller retained the championship against Tony D'Angelo at Halloween Havoc. WrestlingInc described that win as opportunistic, with a crowbar involved after the referee was bumped. Danhausen then revealed a video challenge from Punk, and NXT General Manager Robert Stone made the match official, WWE.com wrote. The bout was billed as Punk's first NXT match in more than 16 years.
Fightful's card preview said Punk used the challenge to call out Waller, saying Waller had been running his mouth about him. Fightful's preview listed the title match first on the card, along with the NXT Women's Championship defense of Kelani Jordan against a mystery opponent from the main roster. It also listed the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic final, with Cody Rhodes set to present the trophy.
Also on the show, John Cena appeared and met with Zilla Fatu to discuss the upcoming John Cena Classic tournament, and Paige lost to NXT Women's Champion Kelani Jordan.
WWE has not announced a rematch for Punk, and it has not said what prompted Owens to get involved. Waller leaves the November 4 show as NXT Champion.
