John Cena has confirmed that the John Cena Classic will take place in December. Cena made the announcement during an appearance on NBC's Today show, and POST Wrestling and Fightful both reported his comments.
Cena first announced the John Cena Classic at WWE Backlash in May 2026. Summer reports pointed to a late 2026 timeframe, and Cena reaffirmed the tournament at FanExpo Toronto in August, according to POST Wrestling.
On Today, Cena said, "In December, I'm really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic. We're going to do an event based off of all the memory, all the nostalgia." He described the event as built around the values of his character, including hustle, loyalty and respect.
The format puts the audience in charge. Cena said, "Our audience is going to decide our champion on that night." Fightful reported that the winner is determined by fan vote rather than match results, so a wrestler could lose a tournament match and still win the championship. POST Wrestling wrote that the tournament showcases up-and-coming WWE talent.
Cena was open about the risk. He said, "It's a really unique live event, I don't know if it's going to work," and described it as WWE taking a bold creative chance.
Several details have not been announced. WWE has not given a specific December date or a location for the event, and how fans will cast their votes has not been detailed. No participants have been named.
For now, the John Cena Classic is confirmed for December, with the date, location and voting process still to be announced.
