Penta won the men's Money in the Bank ladder match on October 10 in New Orleans, a result WrestleVotes had pointed toward weeks earlier. In a report on Fightful Select dated September 24, WrestleVotes said Penta was circled as a heavy favorite for the match.

The report centered on Penta's September 14 Raw match against Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship in Mexico City. Penta nearly won with a springboard Mexican Destroyer before Reigns secured the win with a spear, WrestlingInc wrote in its coverage of the report.

According to WrestleVotes, several members of WWE's creative team had viewed that match as a one time deal. After it, WrestleVotes said, creative figures supported a rematch between the two, calling it "a logical decision from both a business and creative standpoint." The same report said Penta was a heavy favorite for the ladder match, a shift from August, when he was not a frontrunner.

At the time of the report, the confirmed participants were Bron Breakker, Trick Williams and Je'Von Evans, with other qualifiers still to be determined.

On October 10, WrestlingInc reported, Penta defeated CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Breakker, Evans and Williams. He hit a Mexican Destroyer on a bridged ladder to win and earn a world title match that is valid for one year. Evans was stretched out during the match, and Breakker was taken out when Evans drove an ambulance into him at ringside.

Whether the Reigns rematch WrestleVotes described will happen has not been announced.

For now, Penta holds the Money in the Bank contract, which gives him a world title match for one year.
